Say “Cheese… is not all vegetarian!”

About two months ago I have challenged myself to buy the Skinny Bitch and Skinny Bitch in the Kitch books. Skinny Bitch contains information on what to eat and what to avoid to live a healthy strong life, while Skinny Bitch in the Kitch is a recipe book which ingredients are based on the whitelisted ingredients mentioned in Skinny Bitch. The books also suggest that veganism is the healthiest diet.

I don’t yet call myself a vegan and not even a vegetarian since I do eat meat occasionally, take dairy and haven’t yet converted my beauty products to vegan. However there seem to be hope to convince myself to live not only a cruelty-free life but also a vegan life. Hence I bought these books.

Today I finally had the time to try out the first recipe found in the book, which is the French Scramble. All the ingredients I’ve used are vegan except for the cheddar. I couldn’t find a block of vegan cheddar, maybe you could guide me on where to find it since my nearest supermarket doesn’t seem to stock it. However, it does stock Tofutti’s Cheddar slice but I couldn’t find a block version.

So I decided to buy a normal block of non-vegan cheddar cheese.

Luckily, or unluckily, yesterday while buying the cheddar I made a discovery. The supermarket had 3 types of cheddar cheeses: Cheddar, Cheddar Mature, and Cheddar Veg. “Cheddar Veg?” I asked myself. “Isn’t cheese already vegetarian?” Unlike to what I thought, it seems that not all cheese are vegetarian, especially cheddar cheese. Cheddar cheese contains “rennet” an ingredient which is usually derived from an animal stomach. However the cheese industry was a bit kind to produce a vegetarian version of cheddar which contains plant based rennet.

A plus on this vegetarian cheese is that it is cheaper than the normal cheddar. I wonder why they keep on selling the non-vegetarian one…???
